AVOID BIG NUMBERS

It is always easier to save strokes rather than make them up but even the best players in the world make a big number from time to time. As you would expect, it is far more common amongst club golfers and remains the quickest way to lower scores. The great news is that damage limitation is easily achievable by adopting a few simple procedures in your game and I have provided a few of them below for you to try if you aren’t doing so already.

PREDICTABLE SHOTS WITH TRUSTED CLUBS

Groove your swing so that you can play predictable shot shape with trusted clubs on a repeatable basis. Stop experimenting on the course and hoping that you hit a good shot.

HAVE A GAME PLAN

Having a good strategy for your round will minimise penalty strokes and limit mistakes. Applying simple tactics of hitting the widest landing area on the fairway, avoiding hazards and especially out of bounds.

PRE-SHOT PROCESS

Having a constant routine that you stick for each shot is crucial if you want to eliminate big numbers. A pre shot process should include a shot selection that you have the highest chance of playing with a successful outcome.

STAY IN THE NOW

Even with the best planning, not all shots are successful, so it is important to dwell on it and let have a detrimental effect on your next shot so move on quickly and focus on your recovery.

SAVE SHOTS GREENSIDE

Taking two shots to get on the green from nearby is very costly for many players. Adopt a simple strategy and shot selection to get the ball on the green with 1 shot after all, more shots are holed on the green rather than off.

USE THE FLAT STICK LESS

Another way to throw away handfuls of shots is to take 3 putts. Lag putting and distance control are key here so spend some time on drills that enhance your touch and feel.
